Week 5 (Emily and Amanda joined the group)
Our first meeting with everyone (due to the group changes) included the following discussion:
We first discussed what activities Angela and Leigh had been interested in. They liked the idea of a general class presentation focused on Junior High science students. They also wanted to focus the presentation on Mercury alone so that the students weren't confused with the differences between chemicals. It was also assumed that at least some of the students in this age level had heard of Mercury, making it easier to introduce more of its characteristics and its cycling.
We all agreed that we'd like to focus the activity on Junior High students. We thought this age level was appropriate because of their ability to understand what the chemical of interest was as well as the cycling, sinks/sources and policy aspects of the project.
Once Amanda gave a summary of her research, we were all interested in including some aspect of policy and stakeholders into the presentation. We discussed finding a way to show the students why some groups of people are more concerned with ASEPs for multiple reasons (by helping them think through why the stakeholder was concerned by seeing through their perspective).
I (Emily) mentioned using Windows Around the World (as the project outline explained) for at least a way of visually seeing atmospheric changes or the way these chemicals could affect the environment in a given photo. It would (at least) introduce the website to the students in hopes of them visiting and using the site later.
We agreed to try and think of other ideas, but we all really enjoyed the plan above.
